Veronika Edali: Auckland (New Zealand)

  1. What is your name and where are you from? (Country, City). (Current city where you are spending this Ramadaan).

Salaam Alaikum, my name is Veronika Edali, a 25-year-old Russian small town girl residing in Auckland, New Zealand, revert to Islam, mum, wife, content creator, photographer and entrepreneur.

This Ramadan is my 8th one (Alhamdulillah) and like the previous 7 I’m spending it in Auckland.

  1. Can you tell us if you are in lockdown? How strict is the lockdown? What are you allowed to do in terms of movement?

We are currently at Alert Level 3 and we have been at this level for the past 2 weeks. Prior to that we were in complete lockdown for 5 weeks.

At Level 3 a lot of the businesses are operating, as well as schools, but people are still encouraged to work from home and keep the kids home if they can.

If you purchase food it has to be a takeout – completely contactless. People still have to maintain a least 2 meter distance and remain local.

On a positive note, we are now allowed to expand our bubble to extended family members and close friends, but once again we are encouraged to keep it as small as possible.

  1. Being under these lockdown conditions is sure to have made this Ramadaan different from previous Ramadaans. Can you tell us how this Ramadaan is different? Things that you had done previously in Ramadaan and now due to the lockdown you cannot do these activities?

Since I’m a stay at home working mum, my daily Ramadan routine hasn’t changed all that much, but just like many people I miss connecting with the Muslim community. Ramadan brings the ummah together and due to the coronavirus outbreak we are unable to attend mosques and pray in congregation.

That’s why I’m very grateful for my online community! I’m talking to sisters from all over the world every single day. This is how I manage to connect to the ummah this Ramadan. We are in it together, we’ll get through it and come out stronger on the other side. Insha’Allah.

Ramadan 2020 has pushed me to be more grateful for all the blessing we have in our day to day life, especially our health. I strive to be better, more productive, more mindful and make every single day count! Alhamdulillah.

  1. Can you share a positive message/ impact that spending Ramadaan under these new conditions has brought about for you and/or your country?

Try not to focus on the things you don’t have and can’t do this Ramadan, focus on practicing gratitude and count your blessings instead. Allah is the greatest of planners and we should never forget that. We are going through this pandemic for a reason and we should always look at the bright side of things and find blessings in it.

Enjoy the time you have with your family, fast together, eat together, pray together, be together.

Take it one day at a time and make every single one of them count.
