Points and miles for South African Travellers

Have you ever wanted to learn how to earn travel points and miles—and how to use them to upgrade your experience or save on your next trip? If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by the world of travel rewards, you’re not alone.

In this exclusive interview, we explore the ins and outs of earning and redeeming points and miles. Our guest, an experienced traveler with a deep understanding of the points game, shares valuable insights and practical tips for South Africans.

1. What are the best loyalty programs in South Africa for earning travel miles and points?

All the loyalty programs most often mentioned are international. Domestic-only programs tend to offer limited value. Among the most rewarding options, Marriott Bonvoy stands out for hotel points. Qatar Airways’ Avios program is highly regarded for offering some of the lowest mileage requirements for business class upgrades. These two programs also benefit from a strong partnership, allowing for an easy point-to-mile conversion, often with added transfer bonuses.

American Airlines AAdvantage and Air Canada’s Aeroplane—though not operating directly in South Africa—are valuable partners within shared alliances. Both offer significantly lower taxes and surcharges when redeeming miles for flights on carriers like Emirates and Etihad, compared to using those airlines’ own programs like Skywards. This can apply even when flying on the same routes and aircraft, offering travellers substantial savings.

2. Which credit cards offer the most travel rewards, and how do they compare?

The South African credit card market is unfortunately quite limited when it comes to earning travel rewards, especially compared to international credit cards that convert spend into valuable miles and points.

Currently the Avios credit card remains one of the few viable options for frequent travellers, particularly for those who fly with British Airways and its oneworld alliance partners.

3. How can everyday spending, like groceries and fuel, help accumulate travel miles?

While the American Express and Avios credit cards, as well as the SAA Voyager card, do offer the ability to earn loyalty points or miles, the value of those earnings can be underwhelming. American Express, in particular, comes with high annual fees, and although points can be transferred to various partners, the overall return on spend isn’t always competitive.

The SAA Voyager card was once a strong contender, but with the airline’s relaunch as “SAA 2.0”, its route network has been significantly reduced. This limits the practical use of accumulated Voyager miles. Many of SAA’s previous destinations are now more affordably served by competitor airlines when paying cash. In such cases, the cost-benefit of redeeming miles versus simply booking with another carrier often favors the latter.

4. Are there any lesser-known ways to earn travel points beyond flights and credit card spending?

I personally rely on Marriott Bonvoy for the vast majority of my hotel stays. From Hong Kong to Hawaii, and nearly everywhere in between, including Umrah we have stayed at the Mariott Bonvoy. As the world’s largest hotel group, Marriott offers global coverage and is one of the most versatile loyalty programs.

A standout feature is their conversion rate: 3 Marriott points = 1 airline mile, with an added 25% bonus when transferring in blocks of 60,000 points. To put this into perspective, a free night at a hotel in Makkah costs around 60,000 points. This converts to 20,000 miles + 5,000 bonus miles with partners like Qatar Airways. That’s enough to upgrade to Qatar’s renowned Qsuites on the Johannesburg–Doha route potentially scoring the double bed setup with privacy doors, known as “the double bed in the sky.”

Marriott also allows dual earning opportunities with select airline partners. Through partnerships with Emirates and United Airlines, for example, you can earn both miles and points on qualifying hotel stays. Car rentals are often an overlooked source of generous point and mile accruals.

Certain international Marriott properties even offer up to 25,000 bonus points per stay—savvy travelers can maximize these by hotel-hopping. In fact, it’s often more cost-effective to book a high-end suite during a promotional period and earn a large chunk of points, rather than buying them outright.

Saudia is an excellent redemption partner, offering one-way tickets for as low as 9,000 miles—making it easy to offset more than half the cost of a ticket. While they no longer operate in South Africa, they do fly to Mauritius at the same mileage rate. This opens creative opportunities for maximizing redemptions in the region.

5. What strategies can travelers use to maximize their points for flights and hotel stays?

For those new to the world of points and miles, it’s wise to start by taking advantage of special promotions that require fewer miles or offer off-peak redemption rates—such as “point saver” deals.

Seasoned travelers should consider using tools like the Points Path extension for Google Flights or platforms like Roam.Travel to identify high-value redemption opportunities. Additionally, one of the most effective ways to maximize the value of your miles is by redeeming them through a code-share partner airline.

Traveloyalty hotel elite members enjoy every 5th night free when booking with points. We also offer select hotel stays with the 4th night free when paying in cash. For optimal value, plan your travel during promotional periods when bonus earnings—such as triple points—are available.

6. Do South African airlines and hotels offer bonus promotions for earning extra miles?

Yes, they do. Travelers should regularly monitor the official websites and social media channels of these companies. Bonus promotions are often announced there. It’s also advisable to review booking rates closely. Some promotions are tied to specific fare classes or packages.

7. Are there any common mistakes people make when trying to earn or redeem travel miles?

Many people mistakenly consider buying points and miles the top strategy, but travelers should generally use it only to top up for a specific award redemption. Redeeming loyalty points later can become more expensive, particularly with hotel programs. A common pitfall is redeeming points at peak rates even when traveling during off-peak periods—such as booking a stay that transitions from the end of Ramadan into Shawwal and paying the same high rate throughout. Splitting such bookings and paying cash for the off-peak nights can lead to significant savings. Additionally, redeeming miles with the loyalty program’s own airline is often not the best value—exploring partner redemptions through codeshare agreements can unlock far better deals.

8. How can travelers avoid losing their hard-earned miles due to expiration or program changes?

For hotels, maintaining your points is relatively simple. You can either complete one stay per year or purchase a small amount of points (as little as $10 worth) to extend their validity.
Airline miles, however, often require more effort to preserve. Unless you hold a co-branded airline credit card, miles typically expire unless you fly within the required time frame or engage in qualifying partner activity such as booking car rentals, purchasing flowers, or redeeming for spa treatments.
