Ramadan Around the Globe: Atlanta, Georgia, USA

Atlanta

A really amazing Ramadan experience Alhamdulilah. I spent Ramadan at Madina Institute Atlanta in 2019.

The Community

The community is made up of many first generation immigrants, so they don’t have extended family. The mosque community is their family. Each night they have iftar at the masjid, and the menu reflects the cultural background of the family who are providing the meal for that night. So one night would be Pakistani food, then Indonesian food, then Somali food.

The Masjid

The community stays at the masjid between Maghrib and Esha. The kids are playing in the parking lot, the ladies prepare tea, and then everyone prays Taraweeh together.

The masjid has a separate large room for women with small children, and it’s always filled to capacity. In the last ten might of Ramadan, the masjid serves suhoor as well.

Eid Salah

And Eid Salah 😍 the diversity in the way people dress for Eid is breathtaking…   Nigerian sisters in their gorgeous ethnic attire, Pakistan sisters in their stunning traditional outfits. It really was a wonderful experience.

The masjid offers so many programs – tafsir, Quran reading, kids programs, Qiyamul Layl. And they do community outreach that you can get involved with, Alhamdulilah

I really had an amazing Ramadan experience there.

Can anyone spend Ramadan in Atlanta?

They have itikaf in the masjid for the last 10 days. And there are places to stay close by the masjid. The people are so friendly! When they realised I was from South Africa, so many families invited me to their homes or brought me food.
