About the Author:

A travel addict, and poetess in progress, Umme Danyaal is a counselor by profession and has done higher education in Islamic studies. Being an ardent reader, the history of Islam intrigued her and the more she read the more spellbound it left her. She began researching and studying more about it. Together with this passion, she is fortunate to have been allowed to travel frequently and vastly. She now writes Islamic history articles in the hope of reviving our heritage and enlightening people on the beauty, accomplishments, and strength of Islam as a religion and what it has done for the world and humankind at large. She has the belief that if we know who we are and practice our religion consciously we can once again lead the world because Islam is a complete way of life.

Are our minds programmed with a Eurocentric-based mindset?

We live in times where we are programmed and fed certain information that we are not allowed to question and with this information, we are made to believe in many things which are untrue, the way in which we have been programmed limits our ability to think beyond this information and therefore we grow with a Eurocentric-based mindset.

We are made to believe that white is superior to black,  a doctor superior to an Aalim, Europe more advanced than Africa, English more eloquent than another language, eating with a knife and fork more cultured than eating with the hands, just to mention a few examples. As part of our curriculum when we are taught history we are taught that the period sandwiched between the fall of the Roman empire and the Renaissance was the Dark Ages and the world didn’t benefit from this era at all.

We have also been taught that Christopher Columbus discovered America in 1492 and this was known as the era of discovery.

But was it the era of discovery?

Did Mr Columbus really discover America?

Have we given it a thought that a place which had already been inhabited for about 20000 years before Cristopher Columbus “found”  it was actually a new discovery.

Was Africa actually a poor and illiterate continent? When in reality it was a hub of trade and education before it was colonized.

Have I got your attention?

Let us learn and discover more about our history in the next article:
