Volvo EX30 Twin Performance Review: Small Size, Big Electric Punch

Volvo EX30 Exterior

Volvo’s reputation has always hinged on safety, practicality, and an understated kind of Scandinavian cool. But with the EX30 Twin Performance, the Swedish marque has pulled off something rather unexpected. It’s created a compact electric SUV that not only lives up to its heritage but also injects a hearty dose of fun into the mix. And make no mistake—this small crossover doesn’t just whisper “performance,” it shouts it from the rooftops.

Let’s dive into the latest electric contender that’s redefining what small EVs can—and should—be.

Exterior: Understated Scandinavian Swagger

At first glance, the EX30 doesn’t scream performance—and that’s kind of the point. True to Volvo’s clean, minimalist design philosophy, the EX30 presents a taut, sculpted profile that’s both futuristic and timeless. Its compact proportions conceal the power that lay beneath, while the LED headlights and flush door handles give it a premium, cohesive look.

Volvo has cleverly blended SUV cues—chunky wheel arches, a confident stance—with a refined silhouette that wouldn’t look out of place in a high-fashion design catalogue. Optional 20-inch alloys and two-tone paint finishes add some visual spice, but nothing here feels forced.

Interior: A Cabin That Calms and Connects

Volvo EX30 front cabin

Step inside the EX30, and you’re met with a cabin that feels more like a boutique hotel lounge than a traditional car interior. Volvo has gone all-in on sustainable materials—think woven flax-fibre panels, recycled denim accents, and minimalistic surfaces that feel tactile and contemporary. It’s environmentally conscious, yes, but also deeply stylish and exceptionally comfortable.

The centerpiece is a portrait-oriented 12.3-inch touchscreen, running a Google-based interface that’s as intuitive as it is responsive. In a break from tradition, the EX30 ditches the instrument cluster entirely, displaying speed and driving info via the central screen. It takes a moment to adjust, but once you’re settled, it actually declutters the experience. Google being integrated into the infotainment system is really a game changer. Now you do not have to worry about connecting your phone to use Google Maps. It is already built-in for you. Thank you Volvo.

Space-wise, the EX30 makes the most of its compact dimensions. Front occupants have plenty of room, with clever storage solutions and a flat floor adding to the airy ambiance. Rear space is more suited to kids or smaller adults, but for city dwellers or young couples, it’s more than adequate. And the 318-litre boot, while not cavernous, is practical enough for weekly hauls and weekend getaways.

Performance: Something to Behold

Now for the headline act: the Twin Performance AWD drivetrain. With 315kW of power and 543Nm of torque, this pint-sized powerhouse rockets from 0-100km/h in just 3.6 seconds. Let that sink in. That makes it the fastest Volvo ever made—and it’s in a car barely the size of a VW Golf.

The dual motors deliver an instant, visceral surge of torque that pins you back in your seat, while the low centre of gravity (thanks to its 69kWh battery pack) keeps it planted through the corners. It’s not just quick in a straight line—it’s agile and sharp, too. Volvo’s engineers have clearly tuned this with a playful streak in mind. The steering is well-weighted and precise, and the chassis is surprisingly composed, even when hustling through tight bends.

But here’s the kicker: when you’re not blasting away from traffic lights or carving up B-roads, the EX30 settles into a whisper-quiet, supremely comfortable cruiser. The ride is firmer than a standard model, but never punishing.

Range-wise, the EX30 Twin Performance delivers up to 460 km (WLTP) on a full charge. Real-world numbers will vary, of course, especially if you’re making liberal use of that accelerator, but it’s competitive for the class. DC fast charging up to 153kW means 10-80% in around 26 minutes—perfect for a quick coffee stop.

Verdict: The EV You Didn’t Know You Needed

In a market awash with heavy, bland electric crossovers, the Volvo EX30 Twin Performance is a bolt of lightning. It’s proof that EVs can be compact and exhilarating, luxurious and sustainable. Volvo has taken its core values—design, safety, and serenity—and spliced them with enough electric punch to shame hot hatches and big-badge rivals alike.

Sure, it’s not the most spacious SUV out there, and its reliance on a central screen for everything won’t be to everyone’s taste. But as a total package? The EX30 Twin Performance is one of the most compelling EVs under R1m today. In my opinion Volvo still stands as the best electric car manufacturer to date.
