Durban Trip Advice

If you have kids like mine, when you go to Durban you find things to do that excludes the beach (yes, they are a special kind of little humans).

  1. Natal shark board. This is a short one hour activity but the kids loved seeing and learning about sharks.
  2. Ushaka Marine World the aquarium there is amazing but most of all the kids learn the importance of how litter is killing our wildlife. Really amazing and by the time you are done, they are exhausted as well .
  3. Hole in the wall Ballito. This has to be one of the most amazing sites I have found and the kids enjoyed walking trough the rocks and finding little sea life in the tidal pools.
  4. Gateway mall, between the games and the snow land they have it is an amazing place for kids to spend the day. Everything is basically on the same floor and they will love it to bits.
  5. If you are driving down to Durban do stop at the Nelson Mandela capture site, the art on display is really worth it.
  6. Valley of a thousand hills is beautiful and scenic, they have a steam train that operates on certain days and definitely worth the price.

What else I have found but did not end up doing?

  1. If you or your child is interested in the Earth, its history and life on Earth, visit the small but busy Durban Natural Science Museum. Your children will love the life-size T-Rex model, near complete Dodo skeleton and Egyptian mummy. Cost: Entrance is FREE
  2. Mini town Durban. Something that we really do undervalue and underestimate. The kids will love feeling like giants as they explore the national landmarks around them.
  3. Sugar rush, set in the farmlands in Ballito it’s a great place for kids to unwind and really just be outdoors. Entrance is free to the park but for activities you pay per activity. @sugarrushkzn
  4. Umgeni bird park is home to many of our beautiful birds in South Africa.
  5. Giba Gorge has so much to offer from hiking to mountain bike rides. You can hire a bike from them and they are based in Pine Town.
  6. Hop on the famous Rickshaw bus for a tour of the city from R100 per person, R50 for kids.
  7. Durban Undersea Club offers underwater wreck dives from R250.
