Staycation Anyone?

As the new year begins, and the holiday season approaches, I can’t help but wonder why more people don’t opt for staycations at least once a year. Call me crazy, but there’s a certain wisdom to this madness. Amidst the hustle and bustle of Jozi life, a fantastic adventure awaits you. It’s the perfect time to send the kids to their grandparents, giving you and your spouse a chance to reconnect. The best part? It’s affordable, and it might be just what you need.

Every year, I make it a point to take a staycation, either by staying at home or booking a nearby hotel for a weekend. This provides me with much-needed downtime and the opportunity to explore hidden gems right in my own city. However, staycations require planning; otherwise, you might find yourself stuck in the same routine at home.

Firstly, reassure yourself that your house isn’t dirty, and you can survive a break. Put aside the cleaning materials and allow yourself to enjoy. Secondly, create a list of food places you’ve always wanted to try but never got around to. Don’t read reviews or overthink it—base your weekend or week on your list.

Thirdly, plan an adventure day. Think about activities you’ve always wanted to do but never did—something that will make you feel human and young again. Whether it’s laser tag, roller skating, go-karting, or paintball, the possibilities are endless. Choose one, and let your spouse choose another must-try adventure. Lastly, stock up on antacids because this week involves eating out, spending time together, and dating as you did before the kids were born.

Here are some non-traditional places to try:

Food:

• Casa Piquante at the Lillian Lofts in Fordsburg: A beautiful restaurant that transports you, making you feel like you’re on holiday. Decent portion sizes, and a meal for two costs around R300 with dessert.
• Lezat Indonesians: Embark on an Indonesian food adventure. Ask the owner for recommendations; portions are individual servings.
• Jack’s Bagel in Greenside: Amazing for a quick breakfast, and you’ll spend around R80 per person, including coffee.

Activities:

• Go-Karting: Various locations in and around JHB offer thrilling experiences. One notable place is at Greenstone Mall.
• Paintball: Find great locations near you through a quick Google search and have a blast

Additional Activities for Your Staycation:

• Roller Egoli: Take a trip back to the 80s and let Roller Egoli transport you to a time when you felt like a carefree kid. This experience is pure fun for everyone.
• Ice Skating at Norwood: Brace yourself for an exhilarating ice-skating adventure in Norwood. Not for the fainthearted, this activity might require a Voltaren or two afterward. It’s a thrilling experience that will surely add excitement to your staycation.
• Arcade Games: Revisit your youth and play arcade games for old time’s sake. Don’t worry about your age—go during the week when no one cares, and let the nostalgia take over.
• Art Jam: Unleash your creativity and spend a day at an art jam session, creating masterpieces with your spouse. It’s a unique and enjoyable way to bond during your staycation.

Plan your staycation and make it a memorable time to reconnect with your spouse. Taking a break, finding moments of fun, and sharing laughter are essential for a healthy and balanced life. Enjoy the adventure, explore new places, savor delicious meals, and embrace the joy of being together. Sometimes, the best vacations are the ones where you create special moments right in the comfort of your own city.
