Once Upon a Crescent

As parents we are always looking for ways to keep our kids away from things that are going to harm them, and that includes media that they hear and see. But wouldn’t it be fun to have a media option that’s beneficial and that your kids LOVE?

Mrs Hashimi has created a podcast of original stories that are fun, entertaining and wholesome. If you need an idea of how to keep your kids busy on a long road trip or even during the day, please give this podcast a try. Inshallah it will be of benefit to your family as well.

Please read an article below by Mrs. Hashimi to get to know so much more about this podcast.

1. Please tell us a little about yourself?

Asalaam walykum! My name is Mrs. Hashimi , I am from the United States. I studied Human Development & Family Studies with a special focus on early childhood education with curriculum and instruction certification. I am an elementary school teacher. I have 3 children, ages 10, 6 & 3.

2. What is the name of the podcast you have created?

Once Upon a Crescent: Muslim Kids Podcast

3. From what age group do you think it is suitable for?

Ages 4+

4. What was the reason behind you creating this awesome podcast?

This podcast was created as a means of representation of Muslim kids. I wanted Muslim kids to have fun, engaging bedtime stories revolving around the experiences of their life that could be relatable and educational. For parents, it’s a tool for them to use to start meaningful discussion and dialogue about the Islamic values embedded in each story to build upon themselves for tarbiyaa.

5. When do your kids listen to the podcast?

My kids listen to the stories during mealtimes and sometimes we pause the story and discuss it since I love to question them to check for comprehension.

6. Do you know what some of the other parents have said about your podcast and how is it being received in their homes?

Some parents have reported to me that their child have memorised the duas in my stories that I used. Some have told me that their kids use phrases that I’ve emphasised in some stories like “if you give, Allah will give you more,” or “be strange, be you,” or “Speak good or be silent .”

Some parents have also shared with me that their kids do the activities that the kid characters do in my story like try to finish the monkey bars, or draw Eid cards for cousins, or conduct science experiments or create artwork that correlates with the story. To me these are all benefits of the stories because it prompted kids to take action intrinsically to cement the learning of the morals and values that they learned from the stories. It’s proof of learning to me and that is definitely beneficial to see.

7. What is your aim for other parents and their kids when they listen to your stories?

My aim is to get them to talk to their children about Islamic values through these stories. For them to use these stories as a way to set the stage for a deeper conversation, ask your children reflective questions that help you gain insight and understanding of THEIR perspective. Learn their thoughts and mindset through meaningful dialogue and conversation. I pray this resource can spark conversation between you and your child.

8. How can our readers access your podcast and get to listen to it with their kids?

You can access it anywhere that you listen to podcasts such as iTunes, Google Podcast, Spotify, Amazon Music, Audible, Castbox , etc. That is where this podcast is uploaded to. You can also listen through my website mrshashimi.com , you can find it under the icon – podcast.
